Although not quite at the equivalent scale as sparing festive fowl, but the Miami-Dade County mayor conducted a Donald Trump moment this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a swine named Six Seven. Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood. “This animal is guiltless. Clemency is justified for her. No offenses are on her docket,” stated the mayor in a speech with inescapable allusions to the sheer volume of pardons issued since the commencement of a second term in office. “Except perhaps for eating half a dozen apples per day,” she went on. “Let this swine have a prosperous future free from concern.” This ceremony, which both honors and questions the local cultural practice of feasting on pork during the holidays, was founded to emulate the yearly bird sparing at the White House. The swine, donated by a Coral Gables firefighter, was named for the modern linguistic fad of young people shouting “six-seven” – originating from a rap song lyric – often for no discernable reason. The craze became so ubiquitous that a major dictionary recently made “6-7” its top term for the year. A Peaceful Retirement The pardoned swine is now set to enjoy its days at a countryside refuge “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the event’s official press release. “The pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to begin the holiday season,” said Eric Castellanos, in a notably cheerful message. “It captures the character of Miami: vibrant, multicultural, and rooted in traditions that foster togetherness. Each year, we are honored to observe heritage and mercy in a way only Miami can.” Attendees enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach fritters and Cuban coffee as they toasted the pig's pardon.
