Arrangements for Trump-Putin Summit Delayed Shortly Following Hungarian Capital Negotiations Announced

There are "no arrangements" for American leader Donald Trump to confer with Russia's Putin "in the immediate future", a White House official has stated.

Last Thursday Trump indicated he and the Kremlin leader would conduct negotiations in Budapest in the coming fortnight to discuss the ongoing hostilities.

A planning session between America's top diplomat Secretary Rubio and his Russian counterpart Foreign Minister Lavrov was scheduled to occur this week - but the White House clarified the two had had a "constructive" discussion and that a face-to-face session was not "necessary".

The White House did not share additional specifics on why the talks had been delayed.

Previous Developments

The US president had raised the possibility of a Hungarian meeting via telephone with the Russian leader, a day before meeting Ukrainian President President Zelensky in the White House.

Various sources claimed his meeting with Zelensky had been a "shouting match", with sources suggesting the president had pressured him to give up extensive regions of Ukraine's east as part of a agreement with Russia.

Yet, on this week the American president embraced a truce plan backed by Kyiv and European leaders to pause the conflict on the current front line.

"Leave it as is where it stands," he remarked.

Moscow has repeatedly pushed back against halting the present battle positions.

The Russian government was solely focused on "permanent resolution", Russia's foreign minister commented on Tuesday, indicating that freezing the front line would merely represent a temporary ceasefire.

Diplomatic Positions

The "fundamental issues" of the hostilities needed to be addressed, Lavrov stated, using Kremlin shorthand for a series of extensive requirements that involve the recognition of full Russian sovereignty over the Donbas as well as the demilitarisation of the country – a impossible condition for Ukraine and its European partners.

Zelensky stated talks regarding the front line were the "beginning of diplomacy" but that Moscow was "doing everything" to prevent dialogue.

He also said the exclusive issue that could make Moscow "pay attention" was that of the provision of distance-capable munitions to the Ukrainian military.

Military Considerations

Putin's unscheduled call with Trump last Thursday preceded speculation that the United States was planning to provide distance-capable weapons to Ukraine that could possibly hit Russian territory.

Zelensky asserted it was the weapons consideration that had pressured the Kremlin to enter into dialogue. The discussion regarding the weapons systems had proven to be a "strong investment" in negotiations", he remarked.
