Jailhouse Shock: Brazil's Ex-President Jair Bolsonaro Faces Life in Prison

He fought the legal system and the law triumphed.

Sixty days following being handed a 27-year sentence for trying to “destroy” Brazil’s democracy, one-time leader Jair Bolsonaro at last looks destined for incarceration.

Imminent Imprisonment

The found-guilty coup-monger – who has been subject to house arrest in his mansion while a set of judicial steps and appeals proceed – is widely expected to be jailed in the next few days, amidst increasing talk that he will be sent to a well-known maximum security facility.

Past Statements on Prisoners

During Bolsonaro’s four-decade public life, the right-wing former military man showed little sympathy for the country's inmates.

“Why should we give these dirtbags a comfortable existence?” he once pondered. “They should just get messed, full-fucking-stop. That’s what I reckon.”

In another instance, Bolsonaro stated: “Unless you desire to end up there, all you have to do is to avoid rape, abduction or rob.”

Incarceration Destination Speculation

However the prospect of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda high-security prison in Brasília has appalled allies, several of whom this week inspected the facility in an obvious attempt to prevent the high court from sending him there.

Senator Lucas, a politician from Bolsonaro’s Liberal party who was part of that quartet, said he expected the elderly figure to be jailed in the following week and a half and feared his location could be Papuda.

Lucas claimed Bolsonaro’s serious gut problems – the result of a near-fatal stabbing during the 2018 election race – implied it would be dangerous to keep the one-time head of state there. “His health is very grave. He cannot to handle it if they send him to Papuda … It would be dreadful,” said the senator, who also voiced anxiety about overcrowded cells and the condition of prison meals.

During his tour Papuda, Lucas remembered witnessing cells containing four dozen inmates: “It's almost one square meter per detainee.

“We talked to the convicts and they protest, unsurprisingly, of the awful food,” added the senator.

Allies Speak Out

The senator isn't the lone figure voicing opinions before the ex-leader's anticipated detention.

Penning in a prominent daily, another ally, the former cabinet member Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “brutal” conclusion to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” political career and alleged Brazil was about to see “the greatest political injustice in its past”.

“It is an unfairness that gnaws the hearts of many people in Brazil,” Wajngarten wrote.

Varied General Response

It is possibly accurate given the considerable backing Bolsonaro retains on the Brazilian right. Yet his predicted incarceration has also gladdened the hearts of many others who feel he deserves to be incarcerated for plotting to block his successor from taking power – and also plotting to have him killed.

The lawmaker, a congressman for the sitting president's allied group, commented: “Not a soul wants Bolsonaro to be put in a dark cell. No one desires Bolsonaro to be put in segregation. Nobody desires Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to sleep on the floor. We desire him to receive respectful care – but dignified handling while incarcerated. He can’t continue being his personal jailer for his entire life.”

He observed how Bolsonaro supporters, who have long praising the severe conditions of convicts, had suddenly woken up to their privileges. “Only now has the extreme right – which has repeatedly argued that basic rights were not for offenders – decided to inspect a prison to learn what conditions are really like,” he stated.

“Bolsonaro is a criminal,” the congressman maintained, but that did not mean he deserved “humiliating, insulting handling”.

Potential Jail Environment

Despite talk that Bolsonaro could be transferred to Papuda, which presently holds about 14,000 inmates, his probable location appears to be a nearby penitentiary for officers and other “particular” prisoners known as Papudinha (Small Papuda).

The accommodations are far more adequate than those in the larger jail, although nevertheless a world away from the opulence Bolsonaro enjoyed while occupying the stunning presidential palace, around 12 miles away.

Based on information, the accommodation Bolsonaro could anticipate reside in in Papudinha measures about 24 square meters – roughly the size of vehicle spaces – and features a 12 square meter bathroom with a shower and a 12 square meter balcony. “Bolsonaro would be authorized to have a TV and also a minibar in his cell as long as they were donated by his relatives,” information indicated.

Partisan Comments

The lawmaker denounced the speculated plan to send the former leader to Papuda as “a type of revenge” on the part of the supreme court judge who led Bolsonaro’s coup trial and will determine his outcome in the {
