🔗 Share this article The Lions of Teranga's Rising Star Lamine Camara: From Aspirations to Afcon Favourites. As I enter the space, the young midfielder grabs a soccer ball he won’t let go of until after the conversation. This serves as a simple visual metaphor for a ambition he has never let slip. “I only wanted football; my mind was set on nothing else,” remarks this Monaco and Senegal midfielder. His determination and natural ability won over clubs like Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. Yet, the most difficult person to convince didn't come from a sporting director or coach, it was from his dad. “He didn’t want me to play football but it’s because he had never watched me,” explains Camara. Overcoming Initial Obstacles Eventually, on “a special day,” he received his father’s blessing to chase his path in the sport. Another challenge was his modest frame, which discouraged his hometown team Casa Sports from giving him a deal. Nevertheless, the famed academy – the club that nurtured talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. After he earned the MVP in a regional tournament, the scouts were “shocked” to learn he was without a contract. They acted quickly. “They took me directly to the academy. They didn’t want me from going back to Casamance,” he recalled. A Landmark Year and Continental Arrival This move put him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period came in 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with him lifting the CHAN trophy. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, leading his country to the title and being named best player. A month later, he was unveiled as Metz, emulating Mané. “Adapting was never a challenge,” states the youngster. He has lived alone in Europe, a choice his relatives encourage to maintain his concentration. Influences and Playing Style Distractions aren't a problem for Camara, who looks up to the Belgian maestro's “modesty” and exceptional playing qualities. Additionally, he's a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye. His powerful shot and accuracy from set pieces are key strengths. He admits he must to control his aggression, having been shown red early in his tenures at each French club. “It is a habit I carry with me!” he jokes. Monaco, Mentors and Upcoming Ambitions At Monaco, he values the guidance of veterans such as Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I told myself we are really lucky,” he said. Right now, his focus is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – there's no denying it. After defeating England in their own country…,” he states, referencing a memorable 3-1 win in Nottingham. Regarding a future move to the English top flight, he remains focused on Monaco at present. “I am very comfortable here,” he insists. However, he's often ribbed by icon El-Hadji Diouf about his two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. He laughs, yet remains determined about targeting the senior top prize down the line. “We are the favourites – that's the reality. If you beat England at Wembley… it instills confidence.” Looking ahead, Lamine Camara blends a modest start, steely determination, and big dreams targeting to lead Senegal to continental glory and build his own legendary path in the world of football.
