The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Selected the Wrong Critical Role Song

This latest animated series, the newest animated series from Critical Role, revealed a new opening credits. It features the beloved group of outcasts, outcasts, and criminals fighting hard and making their mark, while teasing at multiple heart-wrenching backstories for characters such as Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, the character Fjord.

All in all, the intro appears amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that something was lost in the song choice.

The intro uses "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional song created by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. This piece originating from the official score of the same name, the second release released by the production company's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great sentimental choice, and I suspect that devotees of the second campaign will love its presence.

But for me, The Mighty Nein's intro fails to capture the hype and energy that was part of the second campaign's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic in my view when it was first revealed in 2015, and it improved further when co-founder the performer added lyrics to the tune for the series' animated intro in 2018.

Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the track was memorable and fun. At the time, I hadn't even watched the second campaign yet, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my phone. It's a song that excites you before you dive into an episode of adventurous fun.

The show's intro with "the new song" doesn't strike the same chords for me. It's a grand piece of music, but from what I know of this party, I can't help but feel that its tone is a little off.

Naturally, Critical Role has already said that the series will have some surprises and differences from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its intro seems to be among these.

The Mighty Nein will be released on Prime Video from Nov. 19. For those eager before that, or wish to prepare to learn about the characters of the second series, the actual play are accessible on the audio platform and YouTube.
