UN:Me: An Cerebral Thriller Merging Survival Horror with Social Deduction Gameplay

The latest Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled several fascinating upcoming titles, but one in particular has seized attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure appears to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.

"It's a unique experience where a young woman harboring multiple human souls within her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Shattered Consciousness

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of high school age. Within her reside four distinct souls, each with unique fears and motivations. These entities can take over at will, unleashing their deep-seated phobias upon her without warning.

Based on revealed gameplay, much of the narrative unfolds within a eerie hospital, though additional clips show the main character navigating a abandoned chapel.

An Environment of Personal Dread

"What are you afraid of? What causes you uneasy?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. People in power. Things that appear minor to other people can activate a deep instinct inside us. This game explores that concept — fears that are specific to each person."

The central gameplay loop revolves around controlling whichever soul emerges at a particular moment. However, these souls will switch involuntarily during gameplay. During exploration, each soul's anxieties become amplified and assault the protagonist in succession. When the soul shifts, so does the specific fear the player encounters.

Unsettling Aesthetics and a Fatal Choice

Initially, UN:Me displays striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is filled with orderlies who all share the same face, with unnervingly wide grins. Patients in the waiting room have large flowers growing from their heads are. Floral motifs are a recurring element, contrasting organic elegance with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities haunting the protagonist is the "true" one. "Each of the personas asserts that the body is rightfully them," notes a creator. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is real."

After a player believes a persona is fake, they are forced to destroy it. However, since every entity can lie or obfuscate the reality, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.

"Maybe you've already destroyed the real [soul] with your own hands," a voice suggests. "The last one remaining could be a fraud. In any case, your choices are irreversible."

UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced release date, but it is available to wishlist on platforms.
