The acclaimed writer-producer never anticipated that the Apple TV+ show would become a massive hit. “The viewers have been incredible,” Gilligan says. “It was unexpected the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.” Now that Season 1 of the hit sci-fi show reaching its finale—and the next chapter already in development—the creative team opened up about the viewer reception and whether it will influence the storyline of Pluribus. On the Incredible Viewer Reception Anyone might to get distracted by the rampant praise and online debates regarding Pluribus. The creator is doing his best to ignore the noise. “It feels like force fed hot fudge sundaes and being tickled to death,” he describes. “It's the greatest thing, but I learn of it anecdotally, and that's on purpose. Never in my life Googled myself, nor do I ever want to. Not because I don't care. It's a rabbit hole I know I would fall into and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.” Despite trying to stay away, there’s no way to avoid the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to take it in stride and try not to let it alter the course of the show. “We make no attempt to adjust our writing,” says Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not changed by online forums.” “It's wiser to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan adds. The Big Question: Has the showrunner See the Conclusion of Pluribus? Considering the creative staff aren’t being guided by fan response, does it imply they already know how Pluribus will ultimately end? The answer is yes… in a way. “We have some potential directions about how the story could conclude,” he states. “however, we remain prepared to throw out a decent plan for a more brilliant plan. This approach has served us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we conceive of something superior and I suspect we'll be doing that.” Then again, if plans fall through, Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to serve as a last resort. “I keep pitching that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and that's where they've been all along,” Smith jokes, “but no one is buying it.” Of course, why not reference the classics? “I want Carol to awaken with Bob Newhart there,” he jokes. Pluribus can be watched on Apple TV.
